La Sirena CN Mataró will try to use home-crowd factor to claim LEN Trophy
The Joan Serra Pool in Mataró will host today and tomorrow the LEN Trophy Final Four, the second European women’s competition, after the Euro League. The Catalan pool is becoming, once again, its host venue. On the previous occasion, in 2016, the home factor proved to be an asset for Mataró, which ended up taking the trophy. Coincidentally, this is the only Spanish squad that has claimed this prize, since the competition was created in the year 2000.
Along with la Sirena, which will face Dunajvaros in the opening day, European runner-up Olympiacos and Plebiscito Padova will make their debut at 15pm. Theocaris Pavlides’ squad is the backbone of the Greek national team, which took gold in the first edition of the Europa Cup just a few weeks ago.
La Sirena CN Mataró lost to their major domestic rival, Astrapool CN Sabadell, in the Euro League quarterfinals, thus being forced to fight for the medals in the LEN Trophy. With the two Spanish squads facing each other in the quarterfinals, it became impossible to to have them both in the final, like last year’s scenario.
Helena Lloret embodies the spirit of the locals, who are going to do their best two claim their second title in this competition. Lloret, in an interview with Waterpolista.com, discussed the motivation of playing in front of a home-crowd and the opportunity it represents: “I am very straight-forward: I see ourselves as the favorites. I can’t picture oursevlves taking home anything but the gold medal.”
After this afternoon’s matches (the locals will make their debut at 17pm), the bronze medal is scheduled tomorrow at 11:30am and the big final at 17pm.
