Wopit, the mascot
Wopit has become in just a few months a key figure in Catalan water polo. Its presence in several regional and national tournaments has made the mascot of the 33rd LEN European Water Polo Championships Barcelona 2018 a familiar face before the major water polo event of the season, which will be held at the Bernat Picornell Pools in Barcelona.
For its design, the Organizing Committee had in mind an irreplaceable element of water polo: the ball. The original name of the mascot comes from the first and last letters of the word “water polo” and the last sound of the first slogan of the championships “Don’t Stop It”.
The choice was also a tribute to the “capgrossos” or “big-heads”, costume figures typical of the Catalan folklore. Wopit is a “capgròs” with a water polo cap, which makes it a unique figure. After its debut in the Spain-Italy matched played in June in Barcelona to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the 1992 Olympic Games, the mascot has been present in numerous national competitions, and as the big day approaches, Wopit will continue to promote water polo in Spain.
