The play-offs

The last stage of the qualifying tournament for the 33rd LEN European Water Polo Championships Barcelona 2018 will take place on February 24 and March 3. In both categories, the round will consist of a two-legged tie. A total of eight men’s and six women’s squads will book a ticket to Barcelona. 

A total of 45 European squads registered for the qualifying stage. Bulgaria and Austria in the men’s category and Malta in the women’s have been knocked out so far. 

In the men’s category, the eight winners will qualify for Barcelona 2018. At the moment, eight teams have already claimed a spot in the final thanks to their results in the latest European Championships held in Belgrade in 2016: Serbia, Croatia, Hungary, Greece, Italy, Russia, Montenegro and Spain. They will be joined by the winners of the following duels: 

France-Switzerland
Romania-The Czech Republic
Poland-Germany
The Netherlands-Lithuania
Portugal-Slovakia
Georgia-Israel
Belarus-Malta
Ukraine-Turkey

As for the women, the six qualified teams after Belgrade 2016 are: Hungary, Italy, Greece, the Netherlands, Russia and Spain. These squads will be joined by the winners of the following play-offs:

Israel-Portugal
Serbia-Ukraine
Germany-Romania
France-Switzerland

After this tournament, the Organizing Committee will schedule the draw ceremony, which is likely to take place in mid-March. The 33rd LEN European Water Polo Championships Barcelona 2018 will be held at the Bernat Picornell Pools from July 14-28.
