The Russian women’s national team will be the first to test the waters at the Bernat Picornell Pool on July 11th, three days before the start of the competition. Russia will spend the days prior to the Championships in Catalonia, with Sabadell and Calella as headquarters for both national teams.

The Russian Federation is one of the heavy favorites to win the title in Barcelona 2018, especially the women’s squad, which will eye their fourth gold medal in the history of the European Championships. Russia brought home the title in 2006, 2008 and 2010, their last podium in this competition.

In Barcelona 2018 they have been drawn into Group B along with Serbia, Germany, Turkey, Spain and Hungary. The Spaniards and Hungarians will be their main rival in the preliminary stage.

In the men’s category, Russia has only claimed a medal since the dissolution of the Soviet Union, in the European Championships held in Seville in 1997.

The Russian national team led by Sergey Evstigneey will face Serbia, Slovakia and Romania in Group D.
