Ivica Tucak and Maro Jokociv, from Croatia, Dejan Savic and Filip Filipovic, from Serbia, and David Martín and Marc Minguell, from Spain. They were the protagonists of the press conference ahead of the men’s competition, which starts tomorrow. As the kick off nears, the participating teams are ready to battle it out at the Picornell Pools.
These are the most important quotes from the six international water polo stars:
Marc Minguell (Spain player):
“Playing at home is a double-edged sword; on the one hand you have the unconditional support of the crowd, but on the other there’s the extra pressure as we are expected not to fail. We hope to be at our best and leave a good impression by competing head to head with some of the best teams in Europe.”
David Martin (Spain head coach):
“The team is on the rise. I’m very pleased with the work we’ve done and I believe that we have been able to correct some mistakes that we were making when playing offense. The Picornell Pool is a magical venue and the crowd’s support will be key in the toughest moments. We are convinced that we will be playing against some of the best teams, which allows us to dream about making it to the final, and even winning it.”
Dejan Savic (Serbia head coach):
“The pool is great and I’m convinced that the event will be a success. We are starting a new cycle after competing at the Olympic Games in Rio two years ago. The team’s core remains the same except for a handful of new additions. The first match is vital for us, but we know that the round of 16 and the quarter finals will be decisive. We hope to achieve all of our goals in Barcelona. Nothing is impossible.”
Filip Filipovic (Serbia player):
“The key guys are mostly the same in our team so we are as strong as ever. Our goal is to retain our title in Tokyo and we are in the process to achieve that. Wherever we play, we are going for the title and this time it’s not going to be different.”.
Ivica Tukac (Croatia head coach):
“Today in Croatia everyone is talking about football and about the final of the World Cup against France. This is a great event for us. We will watch the match on TV and naturally we will celebrate. Tomorrow we turn the page to focus on our objective, which is to win our games here.”
Maro Jokovic (Croatia player):
“We are with the people of Croatia today and even though we are away in Barcelona, we are will be with them cheering on. Being in the world Cup final is wonderful for Croatia.”
